Chapter 64 - 55 Lanci arrived at the performance venue_1
In the main auditorium of the Demon Academy, an immersive music concert is in progress.
In the center of the stage, a demon, head ablaze with blue flames, is passionately singing. Its figure is clear under the spotlight, and its roaring voice is so powerful that it seems to echo from the depths of hell itself, with every note saturated with the power of death metal.
The look of seriousness and immersion lays on the faces of the judges. They either frown or close their eyes, listening intently to the performer’s voice.
As the lights dim, the entire venue descends into darkness. Then, the light of the stage starts changing, and the singing voice explodes in the silence, bringing the performance to its peak. A magic-induced burst of light illuminates the entire stage. Many students in the back row immediately let out exuberant shouts that reverberate throughout the theatre.
For a moment, Lanci feels as though the Demon Academy is employing some new teaching methods.
But the stranger it seems, the more bizarre the task of difficulty level 2 appears.
According to Bachel, it is certainly several times harder than the level 1 demon magic text examination conducted earlier.
Lanci surveys the entire auditorium.
The four music tutors who seem to act as judges and sit at the front of the stage appear to be of high status. But their magic power isn’t very strong. Rather, the teacher who stands behind the curtain as if acting as a host emanates a frightening magic fluctuation.
Indeed, the teacher seems to be the controller and rule preserver of this classroom, and his proper attire and decorations seem to indicate his higher status among the faculty in the Demon Academy, even higher than the dragon and owl demons in the previous test.
Sure enough.
Lanci, Hyperion, and Bachel, who sit in the audience, soon receive the examination guide sent by the servitor, a small black-eyed entity with wings, ordered by the teacher.
The words written on the brown cover of the booklet are:
[Demon World Music: Final Examination and Performance]
[Venue: G24 Corridor, Devil’s Royal Grant Theater]
"Another exam?"
Lanci mutters to himself as he flips open the booklet.
"As we’re nearing the end of the semester, there will be more final examination-type courses."
Bachel mutters nearby.
It’s his first time being brought into a level 2 classroom.
As soon as he stepped in, he felt completely intimidated.
In this period, any randomly chosen classroom may hold an examination.
But they had to take the examination anyway due to the required payment of 5 credit coins per day; if they could not pay, they faced execution.
Only the students with ample surplus credit coins could relax during this examination season.
"We’re already here."
Lanci nods, then starts reviewing the guide for this course.
The booklet is very thin, it only takes a minute or two to read through.
The rules are quite simple.
Students in the classroom can choose when to take the examination-
that is, come on stage and perform Demon World Music:
[Examination requirement: Your music needs to be approved by at least two music tutors.]
[Performance time limit is within 2 minutes, each invited music tutor has sworn an oath to the Demon King, they will judge the performance strictly and fairly based on their specialization.]
[Note: Students watching the performance cannot use any magic. However, during the performance on stage, all magic that aids the performance can be used. Any offensive magic that harms the tutors in the audience is strictly prohibited.]
[Note: Rulebreakers will be wiped out by the magic eye directly. Those who do not satisfy the requirements will be executed on the spot, and those who don’t participate in the exam will also be executed. Those who satisfied the examination requirements can leave the examination area after class ends.]
The rules further explained that whether you chose to go first or last, you cannot leave midway. Students need to watch the full performance and provide feedback and basic interactions.
Because besides being a final examination, it’s also a Demon World concert, without which it would lose the most important element of excitement.
Upon looking up, Lanci notices a giant magic eye floating above the classroom. It seems to be watching and transmitting the entire scene in the classroom.
"Lanci, are you good at music?"
Having finished reading the guide, Hyperion closes it and places it on her lap. Turning towards Lanci, she asks.
Since Lanci chose this classroom, he must have some confidence.
As for her, though she was trained in arts since young, she can’t exactly say she’s very proficient in it.
"I’m average at music, but anything related to arts has some similarities."
Lanci folds his arms, looking at the performing stage contemplatively.
You can’t master music overnight, and in the Shadow World, there’s no such thing as a dead end unless you make a mistake. Therefore, this exam should not purely test the challengers’ artistic attainment, but also contain a hidden way to pass the test.
Of course, if a challenger is exceptionally gifted, they might be able to pass quickly without following the rules.
For example, if someone actually managed to complete the previous demon magic text examination paper, then they could naturally stroll out of the exam room with heads held high.
"Then I will follow your lead."
Hyperion nods. Since Lanci doesn’t have any special instructions, she decides to stay close to Lanci to protect him if he requires help.
But she didn’t expect Lanci to be confident in his artistic skills this much.
"This is the end..."
Upon reading the content on the guide, Bachel’s face turns pale with fright.
He now regrets his greed in following Lanci into this level 2 classroom.
Seeing Lanci’s calm demeanor, there might be a way to pass the examination. But this kind of solo performance was impossible to take along with him!
"Calm down, we still need you to lead the way, so we’ll cover you."
Lanci pats Bachel’s shoulder, reassuring him.
Upon hearing Lanci, Bachel fiercely nods his head.
The only remnant of peace within him is entrusted to the radiant demon man beside him.
Then, Lanci turns his gaze back to the stage and the four tutors.
For now, there’s no telling how difficult it is to gain approval from the music tutors.
Just a bit ago, when they entered the classroom, the performance of the student they saw ended and it was time to announce the result.
While waiting for the result, Lanci and Hyperion exchange glances.
"What do you think about this performance?"
"It is quite impressive."
Their mutual verdict is that the musician’s performance is markedly excellent.
At least this student would have Lanci and Hyperion’s approval.
However.
Among the four large chairs facing the stage.
Only one tutor’s facial expression indicates their satisfaction with the performance, while the other three maintain stern expressions.
"I think it’s okay."
"I’m not particularly impressed."
"Not good."
"Very poor."
Consequently, the hosting teacher demonstrates his unique coldness and decisiveness, raising his hand for a silent judgment. In the next moment, the demon student’s body splashes out like a flowering burst of blood. The lifeless body collapses on the stage, while a wet red stain spreads below him. It’s like an abrupt ending of a hurried celebration!
