Chapter 394: Wake up, Luna!

Chapter 394: Wake up, Luna!

Luna got up that morning to the annoying sound of knocking on her door. She was accustomed to going days without sleep and pushing herself to the point of passing out, which was a lot to say considering she was an ascended, but waking up was always difficult for her. She particularly hated being woken up by other people because that broke her daily routine, but she could endure something like that.

What she couldn't tolerate at all was hearing loud noises in the morning since her lycantrope senses were naturally active while she slept.

On that particular morning, all the boxes of what annoyed her the most were ticked, but for some odd reason she wasn't upset in the slightest. Maybe it was the fact that the presence of so many hybrids on the city, albeit enemies, made her feel less lonely, or perhaps it was that it Uriel who woke her up, but for whatever reason she got up in an exceptionally good mood that morning.

"I'm sleepy, go away!" She shouted from inside her room, but Uriel insisted.

"Luna, this is really important, please wake up."

"Uhm," She hummed for a few seconds before replying shortly. "No."

"Good graces! Did you forget who you're speaking to?" Nika scoffed and then continued. "just tell her it's about cryptids and she'll come running." Nika spoke the last part loudly enough for Luna to hear.

"How did you know it's about cryptids?" Uriel replied with a gaping mouth, but Nika's reply left him even more astonished.

"I didn't, I just say that whenever she's being difficult. It works like a charm."

"Is it about cryptids?" Luna asked after opening the door to a slit.

"It is, and it's realy bad... or good depending on which side you're on."

That was more than enough to motivate Luna, who didn't even bother to shut the door before starting to change clothes. Uriel stood still for a couple seconds without taking his eyes from Luna, until Nika's accussatory glare deterred him from peeping. Not that he wanted to do something like that, he just wasn't thinking, or so he convinced himself.

"I'm ready." Luna said as she sat on the table and took a sip of the coffee Nika poured for her.

"Lots of things happened, but to make it short, I need your expertise to figure out what to do about something."

"Uhm, okay." Luna nodded.

"Are you seriously going to tell her about our investigation!? She's a cryptid and..." Before Emma could finish speaking, Nika slammed the table cutting her short.

"I don't know who you are, but if you dare insult my cute Luna again, I'll end you." Seeing the usually light hearted Nika so angry was an extremely rare occurence. On her previous line of work she learned that patience usually went a long way and she rarely got upset at anything.

Even when things didn't go her way or when people insulted or mocked her, she always remaine calm, but whenever someone insulted Luna she became extremely protective of her.

Needless to say, her words deeply affected Emma, but not necessarily for the not so veiled threat she threw her way, but because she didn't remember her even though she was her instructor. As a top student, Emma was used to leaving an impression on all her professors and she couldn't fathom being just one in the crowd for Nika.

The only thing that allowed Emma to take the hit in silence instead of making a fuss, was that Nika didn't look anything like the professor she met. She was wearing her cutsy bunny slippers and a long T-shirt with no pants whatsoever which heavily contrasted with her perfect business attire.

"I do trust her, more than I trust anyone in this building," Uriel said with confidence which prompted a pained 'Hey!' from Medusa who was on the next room pretending to mind her own business while eavesdropping. Uriel, though, completely ignored her and continued speaking.

"There was a rumor going around that they were selling human meat on the south district market and the head of the Cryptid hunting agency asked me to investigate the matter."

"Did she? Huh..." Nika huffed hinting that she knew her, but she then fell into a pensive state.

"I have no particular interest on human meat, thanks for the invite anyway." Luna replied thinking Uriel was asking her out.

"That's not it! There, I found a food cart that sold tacos..."

"No! Not the tacos!" Nika shouted and then covered her ears.

Uriel massaged his temple wondering why did he have to put up with so many crazy people, but then he realized he wasn't the sanest of them all either and he let out a sigh that somewhat cleared his mind.

"Listen, I found an Innu glyph that said something I bet you'll be interested on. It said 'Wendigo'"

"Wendigo!? Is it my birthday!? Let me grab my equipment, I'll head over there immediately!" Luna stood up and walked from side to side trying to decide where to head first. Her face didn't leak any emotion as usual, but she was clearly excited. She patted her clothes, her hair and realized she was still a mess. "I'll have to take a shower first..."

"Forget the shower! This is serious!"

"I know, wendigos are... uhm... quite troublesome. But that's why, that's why I need to study them! If I find a couple hybrid specimens, no... they should have innate regeneration so one would do." Her eyes brimmed with flux energy as she couldn't contain her excitement.

In fact, she was so flustered her body began shifting without her realizing it and it fell upon Nika's shoulders to contain her just like she had been doing ever since Uriel distanced himself from them.

"Why are you making such a fuss about those things? If they're just cryptids then they should be as strong as their rank but no more than that. Just grab a handful of your heavenly rank friends and be done with it." Emma scoffed trying to play brave.

"You're an idiot if you think that way. Skinwalkers and eclipses are weaklings compared to vampires, vampires are weaklings compared to werewolves, but wendigos... they're very particular." Luna spoke as fast as a machine gun, only stuttering from time to time.

"The problem with wendigos is that they're invisible." Uriel said with a grim expression on his face.
