?Chapter 141: 135: Changing Clothes, Giving Medicine, Sharing Bed Together (Second Update) Chapter 141: 135: Changing Clothes, Giving Medicine, Sharing Bed Together (Second Update) Granny Zhu used the spare key to enter the room and realized that the rain had wet her quilt, which had given her nightmares that she couldn’t be roused from.
Xie Shang turned off the electric fan first.
The bed was against the window, and half of the quilt was soaked by the rainwater. Wen Changling was curled up inside, her face also covered. Xie Shang lifted a corner of the quilt, revealing her face, her hair damp with sweat.
Xie Shang felt her forehead for a temperature.
“She has a fever,” he said to Granny Zhu, “Do you have any medicine here?”
Granny Zhu pushed the wet curtains aside, “I’ll go get some.” She instructed Xie Shang, “The bed is all wet, carry Changling to Haomin’s room.”
Wen Changling had been feeling unwell since this morning. Granny Zhu had urged her to take some medicine, but she only drank some brown sugar water. The weather these past few days had been erratic, with cold and heat alternating. Tongtong had caught a cold too, and the house just happened to have some medicine in stock.
Wen Changling’s hearing aid was on the table; she couldn’t hear the thunder and a lot of rain had come in, soaking not only the quilt but also the sleeves of her pajamas.
There was an old-fashioned wardrobe in the room. Xie Shang opened it, and the pajamas were just at the very front. He grabbed them and sat at the head of the bed.
“Changling.”
Xie Shang gently nudged her.
She was curled up, dreaming something that didn’t wake her.
Xie Shang lifted her into his arms, letting her lean on him. He pulled the quilt upwards to cover her body, his hand reaching in to fumble for the buttons on her clothes.
He tried not to touch her, but she kept moving, and the buttons were difficult to undo. The rain-soaked quilt absorbed the heat from the body, becoming damp and warm.
His fingertips touched her feverish skin.
Xie Shang paused slightly but continued on with his hands.
Wen Changling felt very insecure, even in deep sleep. Her entire being was in a defensive stance, arms stiff. The buttons on her pajamas had been undone, but her hands were still clutching the fabric.
Xie Shang grasped the back of her hand, applying a little pressure, “Changling.”
Her clenched fist slowly relaxed.
Xie Shang carefully removed her top, awkwardly dressing her in clean clothes while keeping her covered with the quilt. He took the hearing aid from the table, wrapped it in a blanket, and carried her out.
Granny Zhu had already prepared a new quilt.
Xie Shang placed Wen Changling on the bed, “You can go rest now, I’ll stay here.”
With Xie Shang looking after her, Granny Zhu was reassured, “First give her the medicine. If her temperature doesn’t go down, then call me.”
“Okay, thank you for your help.”
Granny Zhu went out and closed the door behind her.
It was raining outside, and with the doors and windows shut tight, the sound of rain against the eaves could be heard in the room, with occasional startling thunder. In the capital, during August evenings, there was already the hint of early autumn’s chill.
On the table, there was fever-reducing medicine and medicine for a cold, both in soluble form. Xie Shang prepared the medicine and placed it on the nightstand, then picked up Wen Changling, supporting her with one hand.
“Changling.”
Her eyelids flickered as she talked in her sleep.
“Ah Na, don’t go up the mountain.”
“Don’t go… ”
Xie Shang gently shook her hand, “Changling.”
“Changling.”
She slowly opened her eyes, with a trace of blood visible in her pupils. She had just had a very upsetting dream, the tears at the corners of her eyes still not dry.
“Xie Shang, I dreamed that Ah Na died, fell from the mountain. ” She sat up, looked at her wrist, and there was no Hooked Cymbidium vine on it. She seemed relieved and exhaled deeply, “Luckily it was just a dream.”
That’s not right.
Ah Na had really died.
Wen Changling sat dazed, murmuring to herself, “It was I who caused his death.” Up until today, it had been a very long time since she last dreamed about Ah Na. Ah Na must be blaming her; that’s why he didn’t want to see her.
She hung her head, looking forlorn, talking to herself, “It was I who killed Ah Na.”
Xie Shang had never felt so helpless before. He wanted to know what had happened to her, wanted to embrace her tightly, wanted to give her his all, wanted to pull her from the abyss, wanted to keep her company in the abyss.
He lifted her face so she could see him as he spoke.
“It wasn’t you.”
Wen Changling shook her head.
You don’t understand, you don’t know anything. The person who was supposed to die was me.
She picked up the medicine and drank it down in one gulp.
Xie Shang poured water for her.
She rinsed her mouth, put on her hearing aid, and her consciousness and rationale had detached from the dreams, restoring the usual calm and clarity. As soon as she put on the hearing aid, she heard a thunderclap nearby.
The curtains were not drawn tight, and she peered out the window, “Xie Shang, do you really hate thunderstorms?”
“Mm.”
“Me too.”
The discomfort in her body combined with the hateful weather made Wen Changling exceptionally irritable, “Xingxing, teach me how to smoke.”
Nicotine is not a good thing.
Xie Shang didn’t want to teach her and made an excuse, “I don’t have any cigarettes.”
Wen Changling knew where Wu Haomin’s cigarettes were hidden.
She didn’t have the habit of wearing underwear to bed, so there was nothing but skin beneath her clothes. She draped a blanket over herself, slipped on shoes, got out of bed, went to the desk, and found the cigarettes and a lighter in the bottom drawer.
“Sister Haomin smokes in secret when she’s under a lot of stress, hiding it from Granny Zhu.”
Wen Changling took a cigarette out of the pack and fed it to Xie Shang’s mouth.
Xie Shang opened his mouth and bit down on it.
She lit the lighter, protected the flame from the wind with her hand, and touched it to the cigarette’s end.
Xie Shang took a light puff, and the cigarette lit up. Holding it with one hand, he turned his face away and exhaled the smoke, “Don’t learn, smoking is bad for your health.”
Wen Changling gripped the blanket and stood up to snatch it.
Xie Shang raised his hand holding the cigarette up high while grabbing Wen Changling’s hand that was reaching for it, pinning it behind her back and casually pressing his palm against her waist to prevent her from moving.
“Can you listen to me just this once, don’t learn.”
Xie Shang was careful not to hurt her, so he didn’t apply much force.
Wen Changling struggled a little, then her hand was free. She didn’t try to snatch it again and stood between Xie Shang’s legs, “Then think of a way to stop me from feeling irritable.”
Xie Shang placed the cigarette on the nightstand, the lit end in contact with the air, letting it burn away on its own.
A hint of nicotine scent lingered in the room.
Xie Shang suggested, “You can vent your frustration on me.”
The thunderstorm that raged at night had also left his emotions unsettled, keeping him awake until the early hours. Having experienced loss of emotional control, he knew the most effective method.
Venting and indulgence.
Wen Changling extended her arms from underneath the blanket, her delicate and fair wrists resting on Xie Shang’s shoulders, “Do you love me that much? You weren’t like this before.” She suddenly laughed, “You used to be so proud and difficult back in Lileitu, I was a bit scared of you.”
Xie Shang tilted his head and touched his forehead against her bare wrist, noticing that her skin was still slightly warm.
“Really, you were scared of me?”
Of course not.
“Do you love me?” Wen Changling suddenly asked.
Xie Shang didn’t hesitate, “Mm.”
She wrapped her arms around Xie Shang’s neck and nestled on his shoulder with a laugh.
It seemed she wasn’t concerned about revealing too much.
Xie Shang didn’t have such great composure and adjusted the blanket that had slipped from her shoulders.
She kicked off her shoes, stepped onto Xie Shang’s legs, and climbed onto the bed, boasting with a triumphant smile, “Then in the future, I’ll ride on your head and be the boss.”
In the future…
The smile at the corner of her mouth suddenly froze.
Xie Shang sensed the up and down fluctuations in her mood and asked what was wrong.
She tossed aside the blanket and lay down, scooting over a bit, “Xie Shang, come lie down and sleep with me.”
Xie Shang hesitated briefly before getting up to snuff out the cigarette on the nightstand, wrapped it in paper, and threw it away, then returned to the bed, pulled back the covers, and lay down.
Wen Changling turned over to face him, “If you wake up before me tomorrow, don’t wake me.”
“Okay.”
“Remember to hide Sister Haomin’s cigarettes.” The cigarette pack and lighter were placed beside the pillow.
“Okay.”
Wen Changling closed her eyes, “Please call in sick for me.”
“Okay.”
Xie Shang touched her forehead, noting that her temperature had gone down a bit. He slipped his hand beneath the pillow and pulled her into his arms.
