Chapter 408: Show Us What You’ve Got
Mio also used her headgear to observe the overall assessment on the training ground in more detail with crystal-clear zoom.
Yusagi used her magical eyes and took note of several possible talents that Erina could recruit.
As for Elysia, she would only recommend Linda and Satria, but she also wished to get to know Linda’s dormmate and maybe the talented people with a good heart.
Since the students were called based on absence numbers in alphabetical order, Linda was in the middle, but her dormmate Ye Lan was close to the last.
"Hmm..." Elysia took off her sunglasses when the class monitor in Linda’s classroom came forward.
"He is Han Jue, the youngest son of the Han Clan in Shanghai. His potential is at A-Class with his Power Augmentation superpower." Zheng Zan cleared his throat and explained a little when he noticed Young Master El’s interest.
"Oh..." Elysia nodded in understanding, but that didn’t mean she was positively interested. This Han boy targeted Linda and also bullied her future knight ranger.
"Hum." Han Jue nodded to the nearby instructor, indicating his readiness.
Several weapons lay on the rack, and a dummy target waited ten meters from where he stood.
Han Jue picked up the most ordinary-looking handgun with a 9mm bullet. He needed only one bullet to show his greatness.
Before taking his stance, Han Jue looked at the experts in the audience seats around the training ground, confident that he would shine and be contested by everyone. However, he would politely refuse them to boost his popularity and prestige.
"I already have my new guild supported by my clan in hand. You can just lick my boots." Han Jue muttered under his breath. He took his stance and used his superpower. "Enchance!"
The spiritual glow shone from his body and transferred to the gun and the bullet.
*Bang!*
Han Jue pulled the trigger and a bullet was fired at the dummy target, making it explode as if it had been hit by a powerful blast.
"Heh~" Han Jue smirked and made a cool pose. Even though he had other skills to show, that one was enough. He returned to his line, giving a wink to Linda.
Unfortunately, the girls around Linda were the only ones who went crazy with him. Linda ignored him and kept looking forward.
"A-Class potential, huh..." Satria silently observed Han Jue. That young man was like a popular lifeguard but also had impressive abilities.
Based on his previous assessment, he was at B-Class potential. However, they were at similar starting points as cadet heroes. Even though they were in different potential classes, he was confident in his superpower because he still had a lot of room to develop, especially in certain situations.
"Linda Esmeralda."
A few moments later, Linda’s name was called, and Satria immediately came out of his train of thought.
Linda’s potential talent was at S-Class, and that was in a league far above. Even though Linda’s superpower didn’t focus on combat, the recent practical exam still surprised everyone. That was how Linda gained everyone’s respect with her versatile superpower and became the vice class rep.
"Exchange." Linda held a seed and spirit stone. She put her hands together, manifesting a transparent energy ball. The spirit stone vanished and she threw the seed toward the dummy target.
At that very moment, a forest of sharp thorns emerged from the ground within a ten-meter radius, impaling the dummy target in a death trap.
The audience soon discussed and became a heated conversation, arguing because Linda’s ability was more than what an eye could see. The Energy Exchange superpower in the S-Class potential could be developed into many other things!
Several parties took note of Linda and hoped to recruit her into their guild, including Lin Yan.
"Take note of her and collect all information about her." Lin Yan spoke to his assistant.
"Yes, sir." The secretary immediately accessed Underworld Society’s intel network from her laptop.
"Hmm..." Maya looked around curiously, trying to find someone. She had no idea why, but she felt her young master was somewhere nearby.
"Eh?" Elysia also felt Maya’s presence was nearby, but she chose not to make her presence obvious. Due to the news about Erina’s recruitment, several local guilds and factions also came for this event.
"Linda is good. We should recruit her." Erina nodded in agreement. That kind of ability was precious. Even though Elysia didn’t ask for it, she would still invite Linda to join her faction.
"Then, please write an invitation letter." Elysia took out a letter.
"I’ve prepared it. Should we use the name Minamoto Group or Guardian of Dream?" Erina took out several papers that she had written, but the names were still blank.
"!!!" Zheng Zan gasped in surprise. It would be a piece of wonderful news if the Guardian of Dream made some recruitments.
"Minamoto Group, but use this ordinary envelope. It will be a letter from the invitation pile, but put a hint in the letter." Elysia replied with a wink.
"Alright. I need to add a little." Erina wrote the hint before the closing sentence, then wrote Linda’s name on the recipient.
"..." Zheng Zan knew it, but he remained silent. The military tried to recruit Linda to join WUF Asia a few days ago, but she refused, and the academy also protected her. She said that she already had a future plan in mind, and politely declined the invitation.
The event continued. Many young talents could develop into powerful espers and specialized experts.
Of all the first and second-year students, less than forty were in A-Class potential, and S-Class potential could be counted on the fingers of one hand.
Satria’s turn soon arrived, and he stepped forward to be tested.
"Cadet Satria. You may show us what you’ve got." The instructor called out because the cadet remained silent for a few seconds.
"Err... my superpower is a bit tricky. Can I get a defense class test?" Satria rubbed his head with an awkward smile.
"Sure thing. Please enter the shooting zone. I will throw a blast, and you defend with your power." The instructor agreed and got ready.
Satria stood in the shooting zone between the dummy target and the instructor, preparing to defend against all kinds of attacks.
He had been experimenting in many ways to learn his superpower in the past few days, and his biggest weakness was that he couldn’t actively attack without a defense trigger.
"Here you go." The instructor created a wind blast in his hand and threw it like a ball.
Once it reached one meter from Satria, the wind blast exploded like a bomb.
"!!!" Satria took a defensive stance and rooted his feet to the ground as his body manifested an impenetrable shield to protect him from harm.
"Unharmed? Good. That explosion could send you to the hospital if you mess around." The instructor wrote his assessment on his paper.
"Superhuman Reinforcement?" Erina looked aside. She knew Satria’s power was not what it seemed on paper.
’No. It’s natural for them to mismeasure his true worth. He will become stronger in a defensive position, especially when trying to protect something or someone. His overall ability will continue to multiply depending on his knightly spirit. He can also morph into a knight ranger in the name of justice. That’s sound great, right?’ Elysia was pretty excited to tell Erina about that.
’O-oh~’ Erina was enlightened. She knew this young man held a higher potential than the paper. Reinforcement and Superhuman power were too ordinary for the only male hero chosen by Elysia.
Erina prepared another letter for Satria, but to make things less obvious, she would send more interview invitations to some promising talents.
A few moments later, it was Linda’s dormmate’s turn. The timid girl received tremendous pressure from the gazes of hundreds of people around her.
"Water Bullet." Ye Lan spoke in a whisper-like voice. She extended her arm forward, and a water ball shot like a bullet from her finger. Unfortunately, that only caused the dummy target to get a little wet.
"Is that all you’ve got, Cadet Ye Lan? Be more serious!" The instructor frowned, feeling dissatisfied.
"I’m, I’m sorry!" Ye Lan bowed in apology.
She fired another shot, but the results weren’t much different. Therefore, she received a brief scold from the instructor.
"Be more diligent in your practice. Don’t be a disappointment to your family." The instructor sighed and told the girl to return to the line.
"..." Ye Lan became gloomy and depressed, knowing she could do more than that.
"It’s okay. You’re just too nervous to be tested in front of so many people." Linda tried to comfort her dormmate with a bright smile.
"Mm, thank you." Ye Lan looked down and muttered softly, but she felt grateful.
"Phew, Miss Linda is kind and bright. It’s her fortune to be Linda’s dormmate. What do you think, shield guy?" Han Jue leaned his arm on Satria’s shoulder.
"Ugh, yes..." Satria felt a little heavy. This bully’s was rather stocky and heavy. He realized that he had to work things out on his build by going to the gym more.
"Yes, what yes? Hey, how about you become my meat shield? You’re so tough, right? I’ll pay you handsomely. Once you graduate, you can work for my guild."
"Don’t you have a Han Clan at your back? Why do you say it like you want to create a new one?"
"It’s obvious, right? I’m the youngest in the family, and those old foggies have many heirs besides me. They will support all my decisions, and the highest bid is to create a new guild party."
Han Jue pointed his thumb at his comrades and homies.
"Haha, let me consider it." Satria laughed dryly, aware of the danger that lay ahead. These bullies might take advantage of him to his death.
"Huh? Do you want to reject my generous offer? How arrogant of you." Han Jue frowned.
"No, no, Great Lord Han. I’m just not too sure that I can be a good tanker. Your ambitions are big, and I’m afraid of falling at the first step. If you are looking for a good tank, please consider that gentleman over there." Satria played it safe like a professional employee in the face of an annoying, temperamental superior. He then pointed at the random muscular guy not far from them.
"Well, you know your worthlessness. You won’t get any good offers in the future. Just don’t come to beg me later." Han Jue snorted and left Satria alone.
He approached Linda, still trying to get her attention, and that way, he could secure her in his future guild.
Half an hour later, the talent show event ended, and the students were allowed to return to their respective classes.
However, several talent scouts from various guilds came to give the promising talents their business cards, attempting to recruit cadets to join their guilds in the future.
It was legal for a cadet hero to affiliate and work for any guild or faction to make some good money. However, on that note, it wouldn’t affect the first two years of the learning period at Superhero Academy. It would be freedom in the third year, but first and second-year students were under protection and restrictions.
Satria looked down at the ordinary-looking invitation envelope in his hand. He only received one invitation letter, and he looked aside only to find the other students who received many business cards and letters of recommendation, especially Linda.
He then remembered that he was funded by his home country. Therefore, he had to work for the Esper Association in his home country after his graduation. Anyhow, it might be okay to join a guild to make some more money.
After all, the government only covered living costs and academy fees, not other expenses. He would need to make money as his necessities were more than that. Spirit stones and many other things also required money. He would need tons of it!
