He and Qin Lihong stepped out the door, then closed it behind them and hurried away from the place, not daring to disturb Su Han.
“Ah, the families of Old Gan and Old Yan are lucky, with none of their own harmed,”
Qin Lihong sighed, envy evident in his eyes. Zhang Zhengguo nodded in agreement, “Isn’t that the truth?”
In these apocalyptic times, it’s not just about the survival of an entire family; even having one or two members alive, with company, is already considered fortunate.
….
Inside the house
“Aunt Mei, Uncle Yan, please have a seat,”
Su Han gestured for the two to sit down. After calming down a bit, Yan Aiguo and Mei Liping seemed somewhat ill at ease.
It wasn’t because they were nervous, but because Su Han was the leader of their children as well as their lifesaver. Their mixed feelings made them unsure of how to act.
“Su… Su Han, may I call you that?”
Yan Aiguo spoke first, thoughtfully adding, “Meiyu said in her letter that if we see you, we should follow your arrangements. We’ll listen to you.”
Su Han nodded slightly and said, “I should have sent you back to South City immediately, which I’ve recently reclaimed and made safer. However, this visit involves other matters, and some preparations aren’t complete, so I temporarily can’t send you back. Also, there’s the matter of Uncle Gan and Aunt Li still being with those people from West Mountain Villa, right?”
“You… you attend to your own business; we’ll be fine,”
Mei Liping hastily responded, hesitating upon mentioning Gan Yong. “Old Gan and the others were indeed taken away. But… but if you don’t resist, there shouldn’t be too much danger,” she said.
She was worried about holding Su Han back and also afraid that this seemingly powerful young man might assail West Mountain Villa, plunging herself into danger.
Although Su Han had just mentioned reclaiming South City, they hadn’t witnessed it themselves.
Under the rule of West Mountain Villa, a firm impression had been established in their minds: West Mountain Villa was strong.
Su Han didn’t mind Mei Liping’s attitude towards West Mountain Villa and didn’t feel like explaining.
“Aunt Mei, what is labor like in West Mountain Villa? Can you talk about it? And about the current camp…”
Mei Liping and Yan Aiguo were taken aback, then slowly began to speak.
“West Mountain Villa regularly comes to the camp to take people, about once a month. Those taken there are locked up in labor zones, and people from one camp are usually scattered across several labor zones.”
“How many labor zones are there?”
“I’m not sure, but from what I know, one is a plantation, one is a factory, one is a livestock area, though there’s less work there, and then there are those for demolition, filling and construction. All involve labor.”
Yan Aiguo said soberly, “I just came back last month. Honest labor is tiring, but as long as you don’t resist, there isn’t too much danger. Only, the living conditions are regulated… it’s a bit like prison.”
Su Han appeared pensive. West Mountain Villa still had some restraint, understanding that these people were laborers and hostages, not treating them as slaves.
This established control over the various surrounding survivors’ camps, enabling them to manage more resources with less force, slowly expanding their own camp construction.
“What about the current camp?”
Su Han looked towards Yan Aiguo and asked.
“Old Zhang and the others are working very hard.”
Yan Aiguo replied without hesitation, and Mei Liping continued, “Everyone is united; otherwise, we would have died during the evacuation from the Second Automobile Factory. Old Zhang and Old Qin have been fair in their dealings.”
Perhaps the earlier caution from Zhang Zhengguo and Qin Lihong had an effect; now, both of them were also concerned about Su Han misunderstanding, so they quickly clarified.
Su Han just nodded, noting the two seemed not to have been mistreated; it was just that their power was somewhat low, around First-level Intermediate.
“Aunt Mei…”
Just as Su Han was about to speak, a commotion suddenly came from outside.
“The people from West Mountain Villa are here…”
Footsteps were hurried, and the faint sound of passing people could be heard, causing the complexions of Mei Liping and Yan Aiguo to change slightly, the latter furrowing his brows even more.
“Uncle Yan, is there a problem?”
“They’re a week early, it’s not usually like this.”
Su Han’s eyes flickered, “Let’s go out and take a look.”
Su Han was moved to act, and although Yan Aiguo was inclined to intervene, believing it was better to avoid trouble, he swallowed his words upon seeing Su Han’s expression.
The three of them opened the door and left, then saw some people from the camp hurrying toward the entrance of the complex.
When the three reached the gate, the large iron doors were already open, and three heavy trucks, retrofitted with welded metal, stood outside.
Several men in makeshift armor stood atop the trucks, guns in hand. In front of the vehicles, more men stood tall and muscular, with a sharp look in their eyes, and a machete slung at their waist.
Yan Aiguo watched from behind the crowd and upon seeing the man with short stubble and cropped hair in the center, his face visibly changed, “Why would he come here?”
He spoke in a lowered voice and Su Han, curious, asked, “Who is he?”
“One of the deputy leaders of the West Mountain Villa camp, Nie Lin. He’s a Third Order individual; he normally wouldn’t come for the taxes.”
“Zhang Zhengguo, you’ve got some skill, catching a Second-grade Monster. Not far from reaching Third Order, are you?”
Nie Lin’s voice, seemingly amused yet inscrutable, carried over as his gaze measured Zhang Zhengguo, the undercurrent of its intent unclear – perhaps it was a warning.
Zhang Zhengguo inwardly cursed, “Damn it.” No one had expected Nie Lin to arrive so suddenly, and one of the four Second Order monsters, a Second-order Crawler, had yet to be moved to the back to be locked up and was still in the truck’s cage, seen by all.
