Jing Haohao, who was in the midst of speaking, abruptly stopped. She paused for a moment, turned her head, and saw Liang Chen leaning casually against the white railing outside the palace door. His hands were nonchalantly thrust into his pockets as he fixed his attention on her.
Xian’er had known about Jing Haohao and Liang Chen being together since Qiao Wennuan’s wedding. Now seeing Liang Chen visit their set on the second day, she couldn’t help but chuckle. She whispered into Jing Haohao’s ear, “Haohao, you chat with Mr. Liang. I’ll head back first.”
Jing Haohao nodded and waited until Xian’er was gone before looking at Liang Chen, her face slightly pale as she asked, “Why are you here?”
He had been standing at the entrance for a long time, watching her radiant laugh as she acted, her friendly interactions with the cast and crew, and the apparent joy she shared with Xian’er as they conversed and laughed together. But now, when faced with him, her face showed no emotions. Liang Chen felt a slight disappointment but tried to keep his voice casual as he said, “Nanny Lin sent some things with me for you. They’re in the car outside.”
Jing Haohao said nothing. She turned around and descended the stairs.
Liang Chen watched her retreating figure for a while before he straightened up and followed her, step by step down the stairs.
There were ninety-nine steps in total. Neither of them spoke a word—just descended silently and then walked along the winding corridor out of the “Qin King’s Palace.”
By the time they stepped outside, it had started to darken. Holding the keys, Liang Chen unlocked the car, “Where are you staying? I’ll drop you off.”
Jing Haohao remained silent. She gave Liang Chen a glance, bent down, and got into the car. Liang Chen leaned over to fasten her seatbelt before closing the car door.
Film and Television City was vast. The various locations were quite distant from each other, and the hotel where the crew was staying was outside the city. After several turns as directed by the GPS, Liang Chen finally arrived at Jing Haohao’s hotel.
After turning off the engine and staring ahead for a while, Liang Chen retrieved a lunch box that he had asked Nanny Lin to prepare in advance from the back seat of the car: “Nanny Lin prepared this for you. She was worried you were not eating well and asked me to deliver it.”
Jing Haohao glanced at the insulated box but said nothing. She reached out and accepted it.
Liang Chen also handed her some mosquito repellent and cooling water that he had asked Miss Su to purchase in advance: “As this place is remote, it’s hard to buy certain things. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains during summer. Keep these with you.”
Jing Haohao moved her lips without a word. After a pause, she took the items from him.
Beyond a short conversation they had had that morning due to filming, Jing Haohao had scarcely interacted with him till now.
For a moment, Liang Chen didn’t know what to say. The two sat in silence in the car.
As the night outside the car window deepened, Liang Chen cast a glance at Jing Haohao, who was silently looking downward. He swallowed and said, “You’ve been filming for a whole day. You must be tired. Go up, have dinner, and rest well.”
Jing Haohao responded with a soft “Mm-hmm,” opened the car door, took the items Liang Chen had brought, and was about to close the door when Liang Chen added, “If you need anything, call me.”
