The focus shifted back to the school.
Class 19 buzzed with activity during the break because of the new transfer student’s arrival.
Boys gathered in groups of three or two at the back, chatting with their feet on the heaters, while girls whispered behind their books.
The reason for their whispers?
All the gossip circulating about Xia Ye.
“I heard that as soon as Xia was brought home, the young Master of the Jiang Family couldn’t wait to go to her house to call off the engagement!”
“You mean Jiang Yunzhou from Class 1?”
“Yeah, do you know any other young Master of the Jiang Family?”
The Jiang Family, intimidating in power and rich as a nation.
As the absolute leader among the major families in Capital City, they were a mysterious entity to the students.
Unlike the Xia Family, whom they often saw on TV with Xia Xing, and Xia Yourong, who usually acted high-profile.
But the Jiang Family was only known to them through Jiang Yunzhou; they were full of curiosity about the current helmsman of the Jiang Family, Yunzhou’s young uncle, yet they had no chance of meeting him.
“I heard about it too, so I always thought Xia must be ugly and tacky.
But she surprised me today—she’s so pretty!
Why would he break it off?
Is the school’s heartthrob stupid?”
“Hey, it’s obviously because of Xia Yourong from Class 1.
They’re always together, must have been a couple long ago.”
“But to be honest, I think Xia Ye is way prettier than her sister.
When she touched Tang Tianjiao’s face, her gaze was absolutely killer!”
“Maybe guys have different tastes from us.
Plus, wealthy families don’t only care about looks when choosing a partner.
Xia Ye is pretty, but in terms of academics, upbringing, and such, she’s still far behind her sister.
Taken to a mountain village when she was young, she probably lacks worldly experience.”
The girls got so carried away chatting that they didn’t even notice their books had fallen.
When they turned around, they found Tang Tianjiao staring at them intently.
No matter whether the gossip was good or bad, as long as it’s about her beloved Ye, it was off-limits!
The girls’ backs were soaked with sweat in an instant as they quickly clamped their mouths shut.
Xia Ye, however, didn’t seem to care much and was staring blankly at the newly received Chinese textbook.
Zhou Yao, who was loitering at the door eavesdropping on the students’ gossip, had to retract her keen ears, flicking her long hair as she turned and headed upstairs.
Class 1 was on the fourth floor.
The fourth floor housed all the key classes.
It was a completely different world from the one below.
Even the hallway was silent; inside the classrooms, the only sounds were students reciting words or texts.
This sharp contrast between the key and regular classes was what Zhao Yuhuan took the most pride in.
When Zhou Yao entered the room, her seat was in the third row, beside Xia Yourong.
Tian Ye sat just across the aisle from them, and Jiang Yunzhou was diagonally behind them.
Zhao Yuhuan didn’t typically arrange seats by height.
The two rows with the best view of the blackboard, considered gold and silver ranks, were reserved for her favorite students.
Zhou Yao knew that her seat in the third row was all thanks to Xia Yourong’s radiance.
“Yourong, guess what I overheard on the first floor about our country bumpkin’s class?”
Xia Yourong didn’t answer right away but methodically recited the set of English words she had just copied.
Her pronunciation wasn’t exactly standard, but her intonation was quite spirited.
“Yourong?” Zhou Yao called out to her again.
Next to them, Tian Ye frowned: “She’s memorizing words, don’t interrupt her.”
Zhou Yao was taken aback: “Oh, right.”
A few dozen seconds later, Xia Yourong closed her vocabulary book, her tone betraying no anger, “Stop calling her a country bumpkin all the time, she’s my sister.”
Zhou Yao knew she didn’t mind, pulled out a chair to sit down, and rattled off the gossip she had heard.
Of course, she only picked the parts her deskmate liked to hear.
“Xiaorong, you’re saying with such an easy test, and three excellent brothers tutoring her, she only scored 100 points?
What a waste of talent.
If it were me, I could score 500 on a 400-point test!”
Xia Yourong smirked ambiguously.
Zhou Yao glanced at the boy diagonally behind them, then whispered into her ear, “No wonder Young Master Jiang despises her and broke off the engagement with her!”
She thought she was speaking softly enough that no one around could hear her, unaware that the classroom was so quiet that nothing could be hidden.
Her words had just finished when a careless young voice came from the diagonal back, “Who said that?
I have never looked down on her; I’m actually afraid she looks down on me.”
Xia Yourong’s smile slightly faded.
Zhou Yao couldn’t quite believe it.
He, the proud heir of the Jiang Family, afraid of being despised by a country bumpkin?
“Young Master Jiang, you must be joking, she’s a transfer student from out of town, and she dares to look down on you?”
Jiang Yunzhou, one hand rolling a book, sat casually.
The young man inherited the Jiang Family’s good genes, having naturally a face not to be trifled with, and at that moment, upon hearing Zhou Yao’s words, he seemed even more aloof, “What’s wrong?
Didn’t you also transfer here from Hai City in your sophomore year?
Do you discriminate against other transfer students?”
Zhou Yao was naturally sensitive and easily felt inferior.
In fact, Jiang Yunzhou hadn’t said much, but she felt somewhat embarrassed.
Hai City is a big urban area, how could it compare to a village?
Yet she didn’t dare to retort in the end, fearing that if she truly offended Young Master Jiang, her life as a poor, powerless transfer student at First Middle School would be miserable.
Xia Yourong disliked how Jiang Yunzhou was defending Xia Ye, and her expression was noticeably displeased.
She stood up to go out for some fresh air, but accidentally bumped into Tian Ye from the next classroom, who was also heading out.
Tian Ye’s phone dropped to the ground.
“Oh,” Xia Yourong bent down to pick it up, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.”
How could Tian Ye blame her?
“It’s okay, it’s okay, I can pick it up myself.”
But Xia Yourong insisted on helping him, her smile gentle and sweet, “Since I knocked it down, of course, I should pick it up for you~”
The phone screen was still lit, and she noticed Tian Ye was scrolling through a short video replay of a King of Glory gaming expert.
“Do you like e-sports too?” she asked.
Tian Ye was a very disciplined student, and his grandfather was the principal of their school.
So, he normally didn’t have time to play games.
His only hobby was watching these experts’ highlight reels, but he was just a casual watcher and never a fan of anyone, even the wildly popular Xia Xing.
“Just browsing,” Tian Ye looked down and pocketed his phone.
The two of them walked out of the classroom, Tian Ye slowing his pace, “Xiaorong, about what Jiang Yunzhou said just now, you’re not upset, are you?”
He knew she liked Jiang Yunzhou.
Xia Yourong’s smile flickered unnaturally for a moment before quickly returning to normal, “What are you talking about?
Yunzhou and I are just friends.
He just broke off his engagement with my sister, and she’s quite upset.
He’s just feeling guilty, that’s why he said that.
Moreover, he said it in defense of my sister, I couldn’t be happier for her.”
Tian Ye pursed his lips, “With you as her sister, your sister is truly fortunate.”
Meanwhile, the school broadcast system fittingly came on, “Students are reminded to practice regular eye exercises to prevent myopia…”
