As he raised his hand, he saw terrifying cracks radiate golden light traces outward. Shard turned his head in surprise back toward the shrine only to discover that the shrine that had been on the pile of books was now gone. In its place was an old man in a gray robe, his white hair draped over his shoulders blending seamlessly into his white beard at his chin.

Atop his head he wore a gray, pointed, wide-brimmed hat, which, even though he sat on a not-so-high pile of books, still positioned itself higher than Shard’s head. His left hand rested on a long staff, while his right hand held a smoking pipe to his lips.

Because Shard had initially peeked at the shrine, turning his head back this time meant he was almost face-to-face with the old man. Before Shard could react, the old man suddenly widened his eyes and shouted,

“Ah!”

So sudden was this that Shard, startled, stepped back two paces. Had Miss Orland not come to his aid in time, he might have nearly fallen into the bonfire.

“Hahaha~”

With his pipe in hand, the gray-robed old man burst into laughter,

“How interesting, the person who has summoned me this time is truly interesting.”

Setting down his pipe and leaning on his staff, he looked over the four individuals. He was merely sitting on an old pile of books yet seemed as though he were enthroned upon the clouds. He laughed briefly, then took another puff from his pipe:

“Since this shrine has finally been touched, it means this library, which should not have existed in the first place, is also destined to be completely destroyed. So, mortals, before its destruction, would you be willing to help me collect a few books?”

He looked each of them in turn, speaking as if he were an old farmer sitting on the edge of a field, asking a neighbor for help harvesting crops,

“The Gadis Library, a library of forbidden texts, knowledge and history from the First Era that was not meant to be known by those who came after. Its demise was due to their attempt to uncover the secrets of the First Era. Now, it is time to retrieve the forbidden books buried here. Three books, yes, I need three books. Bring them to me, and I can grant you three wishes.”

“Any wish?”
