Chapter 39 - It Doesn't End There
"..."
Gray blinked.
For a second, the world around him seemed to be frozen. The sounds of the city dimmed, and the glow from the streetlights blurred.
Chloe's words lingered in the air as it is to his mind.
"Do you want to stay with me tonight?"
His first reaction was surprise.
He hadn't expected that—not from her, not tonight. But her expression was honest, her gaze, as it looked at him, was steady.
There wasn't anything coy or teasing about it.
She wasn't playing around.
Chloe meant her words.
'...It'd be a lie to say it doesn't sound good,' Gray thought.
He was a man. He had needs, too. It'd been a long time since someone had looked at him like that, made an offer like that. Chloe was beautiful, charming, and tonight, she had made him laugh more than he had in months.
The idea of ending the night wrapped in warmth, closeness, maybe even pleasure... it was tempting.
He was human.
But even so—
No.
He wasn't that man. He wouldn't let his desires steer the wheel when it came to someone he respected.
Especially not her.
Gray's lips parted, but no words came out immediately. He looked down and exhaled softly. After a few seconds, he looked up again and met her gaze, his expression gentler this time.
"Chloe," he said slowly, his words were nothing but a trail.
"What?" Her smile faltered just a little.
"I..." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I won't lie and say I didn't think about it. You're smart, you're beautiful, and I like being around you. Tonight was—" he paused, meeting her gaze again, "—a really good night."
Chloe waited, but her breath had gone shallow. The answer she wanted wasn't coming just yet and she felt that it won't.
"But I'm going to say no."
"Why?" Her eyes widened.
Gray hesitated a little bit.
"Because I respect you."
She blinked.
"I don't want to do that to you—not like this. It's too fast, Chloe. We're still figuring things out. And if something happens tonight, I don't want it to be something you wake up regretting."
Chloe didn't speak. She was too stunned to form words to answer Gray.
"You deserve better than a heat-of-the-moment decision. You deserve someone who doesn't just take advantage of a nice night and some wine. And I'm not gonna be that guy." Gray continued, his voice was calm but firm.
Chloe's cheeks flushed. She looked away, her hand brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, embarrassed. She hadn't expected rejection, especially not like this. Not after how well their night had gone.
But beneath her embarrassment, something bloomed inside her.
There was warmth and respect. A kind of quiet admiration that made her heart squeeze in the best way.
She looked back at him, her eyes looked softer now.
"You're not like the others, huh?"
"Probably not." Gray chuckled once, gently.
Chloe smiled and chuckled, but it wasn't in a flirtatious way. Instead, it was grateful.
"Thank you," she said quietly.
"For what?" Gray tilted his head.
"For not being the guy I assumed you might be," she said before shrugging her shoulder. "And for saying no. Weirdly enough, I think that meant more to me than a yes would have."
Gray chuckled.
"I'll see you tomorrow, then?" Gray asked.
"Yeah. Tomorrow." Chloe nodded
He gave her a small smile, then turned and started walking away, hands tucked into his pockets.
As Chloe watched him go, her heart felt lighter. It was not because she got what she wanted, but because she saw something real in someone she didn't expect.
She opened the car door and slid into the backseat, still thinking about that moment, about that man.
And this time, her smile didn't fade.
Chloe closed the door behind her and leaned back against the leather seat. She exhaled softly.
"Let's go," she said to the driver gently.
"Yes, Miss," the man replied, pulling the car away from the curb smoothly.
As the car drove off on the street, Chloe couldn't help but stare out the window. She could see her faint reflection in the glass.
Her fingers absently played with the hem of her dress. She can't help but think of Gray's words over and over again, settling deeper each time.
She didn't know why it stayed with her so much. Maybe because she wasn't used to being told no. Maybe because she wasn't used to someone thinking about her, instead of what they could get from her.
After a while, she turned her head toward the front.
"Have you talked to him?" she asked, her voice breaking the silence.
The driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror, his eyebrows raising slightly in recognition.
"Mr. Gray? Yes, Miss. We always have a conversation every time I pick him up from the subdivision's gate," he said.
"What did you think of him?" Chloe asked, her voice was casual, but her eyes were focused.
"He's a good man, Miss." the driver said without hesitation. "He was polite, quiet, and kind too."
Chloe's lips parted slightly, surprised.
"I see..."
"Do you know why he's working with us?" Chloe asked quietly, realizing that it was a question she forgot to ask him earlier.
"I think he mentioned once that he was working not only for himself alone, Miss. He's supporting his younger sister. She's still in school, I believe."
Chloe looked out the window, silent. She already knew that.
"Oh right, he once told me, Miss, that he has to make it since no one else will do it for him. That time, I can really say that he was a good man. He never complains."
"I see..." she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
She turned her gaze back to the window with deeper thoughts.
Maybe that was what made him different.
And maybe... it was time she stopped avoiding certain things in her life, too.
She closed her eyes for a brief moment, then opened them again, this time with a hint of resolve.
"Does my dad have a meeting tomorrow morning?"
"None, Miss."
Chloe nodded and sighed.
"I should meet with my dad tomorrow," she said softly.
Their interaction wouldn't end today.
