?Chapter 143: Chapter 138: The Position of Vice Sect Leader of New City Sect Chapter 143: Chapter 138: The Position of Vice Sect Leader of New City Sect The Third Demon and the disciples of the New City Sect clashed, instigated by Xiao Bai’s men. Gua Zhengnie’s people were also involved, but the conflict was ultimately resolved by Jiang Zhuge and the others.
But not two days later, trouble erupted in Ghost City. It was rumored that Tong Hegan was causing disturbances with his gang.
Around the same time, it was also reported that the No. One Thieves from the Wastelands had become active again.
With two incidents happening back-to-back, Wei Sisan felt uneasy and immediately summoned Jiang Zhuge and Xiao Bai to discuss matters.
Wei Sisan pondered, “Do you find it peculiar that these two have suddenly become active?”
“Odd! Sect Leader, are you implying someone is going to stir up trouble?” Jiang Zhuge addressed with concern.
“We’ve only just established the New City Sect. It’s not even half a month old, and already Tong Hegan and Yang Jing of the No. One Thieves are up to something. Isn’t this premeditated?” Wei Sisan doubted.
On hearing this, Xiao Bai commented, “I am fairly certain that Gua Zhengnie and his associates are pulling the strings. This lot and the No. One Thieves have histories of dirty deeds. Four years ago, they tried to nab Ling’er. That matter still remains unresolved, and they’re surely involved.” His recent disciple’s assault had greatly bothered him.
Jiang Zhuge responded, “There might be some connection, but at present, we lack concrete evidence. We should focus our energy on the affairs of the Wastelands.”
“Well, I don’t care if they are related or not. As soon as we find proof, I won’t spare the culprit.” Wei Sisan seemed to have reached the end of his patience. He had spent years addressing the Wastelands’ troubles, yet there were those who continued to create havoc. How could he stand for it?
Xiao Bai retorted, “These matters are not the kind which can simply be tolerated and forgotten. As long as these pests exist, they will always scheme to commit evil deeds.”
“Have Zhi Lang Taoist Priest and Ming Qi returned?” Wei Sisan inquired.
“They will be back tomorrow,” Jiang Zhuge confirmed.
Xiao Bai interjected, “Sect Leader, we can’t just turn a blind eye to these matters. It’s high time that we took decisive action in the Wastelands. We must eradicate these pests. As long as they’re lurking, they’ll always pose a threat. The final solution is to eliminate these troublemakers. Otherwise, it always feels like there’s a knife hanging over our heads. Who knows when they might strike? If you can dodge it, it doesn’t matter, but if not, you could lose your life. As for the matter with Ling’er, if she hadn’t escaped, who knows how things would have ended up?”
Wei Sisan fell silent, punctuating the silence with a cough.
Jiang Zhuge, worried, advised, “Sect Leader, you should look after your health.”
Wei Sisan dismissed him with a wave of his hand.
Xiao Bai declared, “I know of an excellent divine physician. I’ll bring him over to check on you, Sect Leader.”
After taking a couple of sips of tea to moisten his throat, Wei Sisan said, “Have them all gather in the main hall tomorrow morning. We’ll discuss the matter thoroughly and make arrangements.”
Jiang Zhuge nodded in agreement.
Xiao Bai continued, “Sect Leader, I believe we should be more ruthless. We can no longer show mercy. We’ve been too lenient towards Gua Zhengnie and Zun Yu for all these years, condoning their misdeeds, thus, encouraging them to create chaos in the Wastelands. The more we tolerate them, the bolder they become, treating us with complete disregard. Now that we’ve left the Third Demon and established the New City Sect, we should not harbor any reservations. We must adhere to the rules; punish when punishment is due. If not, they’ll never take us seriously.”
Jiang Zhuge remained silent.
Wei Sisan nodded, declaring, “Alright. We’ll discuss any issues tomorrow morning when Zhi Lang Taoist Priest and Ming Qi are back.”
Without delay, Jiang Zhuge and Xiao Bai retreated.
Wei Sisan had spent the past few days considering the establishment of a Vice Sect Leader position in the New City Sect. After much thought, he concluded that Jiang Zhuge would be the best fit. There were basically two candidates – Jiang Zhuge and Xiao Bai – but Xiao Bai was too hasty. Even minor incidents could escalate into major turmoil under his watch. Appointing Jiang Zhuge as the Vice Sect Leader seemed to be the most reliable option.
Initially, he saw no rush in announcing the Vice Sect Leader’s appointment. But given his health, he realized the necessity of having someone who could take charge of the New City Sect if an emergency were to occur.
The next day, at noon, Zhi Lang Taoist Priest and Ming Qi returned.
Upon their arrival, Wei Sisan began, “A lot has happened in the Wastelands during the past few days, as you must have heard.”
Ming Qi, having also heard about the mischief caused by Tong Hegan and Yang Jing, observed, “It’s as if they’ve planned it in advance, both appearing to wreak havoc simultaneously. As if they’re ‘congratulating’ us on our recently established New City Sect.”
Xiao Bai said, “Someone definitely doesn’t like us establishing a new sect and is causing trouble for us.”
“I don’t care whether they just can’t stand us or not, and I don’t care about that, all I know is that I have to deal with whatever comes up,” Wei Sisan continued, “But before we make further arrangements, I want to announce something. I want to appoint a temporary Vice Sect Leader.”
Xiao Bai stopped in his tracks.
“Everyone should be aware of my recurring illness,” Wei Sisan continued, “I don’t know when I might become incapable of leading. Our New City Sect is fairly large now and should have a Vice Sect Leader. Aside from the fact that I genuinely need someone to assist me, if something were to happen to me, there should still be someone to take care of the New City Sect’s affairs.”
Wei Sisan had once asked Xiao Bai who was the most suitable person to be Vice Sect Leader, and Xiao Bai had shared his thoughts. He thought Wei Sisan intended to make him the Vice Sect Leader and had already discussed how he would handle things if he were selected.
Xiao Bai had also heard Wei Sisan’s assessment of him, stating that he wasn’t calm enough. But among him and Jiang Zhuge, he had been with Wei Sisan the longest. No one else had been with Wei Sisan longer than him.
Everyone was anxiously waiting for Wei Sisan to announce his decision.
Then finally, he said, “I have decided to appoint Jiang Zhuge as the Vice Sect Leader of the New City Sect.”
Xiao Bai was dumbfounded, as if a fire had suddenly been doused with a basin of cold water, extinguishing it completely. He was rendered speechless. Time seemed to freeze. He hadn’t expected Wei Sisan to choose Jiang Zhuge directly.
It seemed to be a surprise to everyone, as they all thought that only Xiao Bai was qualified. In the past few years, the two standout people were Xiao Bai and Jiang Zhuge. Jiang Zhuge was somewhat scholarly, but Xiao Bai had a bold spirit and had made many connections. Moreover, he had achieved several significant things for the Wastelands. Jiang Zhuge had done nothing more than recruit people; the kind of work a scholar would do.
Jiang Zhuge looked at Xiao Bai, intending to say something.
But Wei Sisan said, “This is only temporary. Recently, there’s too much going on, and I can’t handle it all. I indeed need someone to assist me, so I can only choose a temporary Vice Sect Leader to assist me. If there are better candidates in the future, we will revisit the issue.”
Upon hearing Wei Sisan’s explanation, the crowd voiced their agreement. Only Xiao Bai was left somewhat bewildered.
Wei Sisan called out to interrupt Xiao Bai’s contemplation, saying, “Xiao Bai, I heard that the people from No. One Thieves have already infiltrated Tianle City, you should take a team and go check it out.”
Xiao Bai rushed to respond, “Uh-huh.” He seemed slow to grasp the situation.
Wei Sisan was aware of this, but this decision of appointing the Vice Sect Leader was made after much deliberation. Xiao Bai had been a bit agitated recently, his actions impulsive. His student had been involved in a conflict with Gua Zhengnie’s men and Xiao Bai hadn’t handled it well. Later, Jiang Zhuge stepped in and stabilized the situation. Jiang Zhuge seemed a more reliable option in comparison.
For this reason, he firmly decided to give Jiang Zhuge the position of Vice Sect Leader.
He knew Xiao Bai might object, but he didn’t want to overthink it. If Xiao Bai could not understand this and be open-minded about it, then he was even less suitable to be Vice Sect Leader.
“Xiao Bai, go to Tianle City,” Wei Sisan ordered, “While you’re at it, keep an eye on East City and West City. Don’t let No. One Thieves cause any trouble in these three cities.”
Xiao Bai was not in high spirits.
Wei Sisan didn’t want to explain too much. The more he tried to explain, the less clear things would be.
Wei Sisan then continued, “Zhi Lang Taoist Priest and Ming Qi, both of you are familiar with Ghost City. Go there and check the situation. If there’s any problem, contact Zhuge immediately. If it’s something that you two can handle, then discuss it among yourselves, if not, inform us.”
Zhi Lang Taoist Priest and Ming Qi nodded in agreement upon hearing this.
Wei Sisan soon made the arrangements.
Everyone gradually dispersed, leaving only Jiang Zhuge and Wei Sisan. Jiang Zhuge seemed worried. Wei Sisan had given him the position of Vice Sect Leader without giving him any indication or a chance to mentally prepare.
Now that they were alone, seeing Xiao Bai’s displeasure, Jhang Zhuge said, “Sect Leader, why have you given me the position of Vice Sect Leader? I truly am not capable.”
“There’s no such thing as being incapable. Believe in yourself. I need your help right now.”
“But I can assist you without being given the title of Vice Sect Leader.”
Wei Sisan replied, “I’ve thought about it, with so many problems currently. I can’t handle them all by myself, especially considering my health that fluctuates unpredictably. If something were to happen and there was no Vice Sect Leader to take charge, that would also be unacceptable. Even though the New City Sect is gaining momentum, having a Vice Sect Leader is a safeguard.”
“But why didn’t you offer the position to Xiao Bai?”
