Chapter 91 - 91 18 Socializing

?Chapter 91: Chapter 18: Socializing Chapter 91: Chapter 18: Socializing In the following days, the air in Versailles had suddenly tensed. Not only had the number of Fire Shadow Knights doubled, but the frequency of Guard Cavalry patrols had noticeably increased. Officials from the Internal Affairs Department also began arriving in Versailles, going from one guest to the next to conduct inquiries. Although it bore a hint of routine, how could any guest in Versailles not possess some measure of status and position? How could ordinary officials from the Internal Affairs freely interrogate them?

Komer was very cooperative with the officials’ visits. In addition to listing his activities in the inn on the day of the incident, as well as his afternoon visit to the Minister of Internal Affairs and evening attendance at the banquet the following day, Komer also named companions who could testify to his account. The officials, apparently not suspecting nobility like Komer, concluded their cursory inquiry and left. This left Komer disappointed that his careful preparations had not been put to use.

However, when two easily identifiable Thunderhorse Knights followed a white-robed mage into the Versailles Hunting Manor, Komer dared not be the slightest bit negligent. He had already learned what the Thunderhorse Knights were capable of, and here, no one but Court Chief Mage Onia would have the authority to command their accompaniment.

Komer wished to leave the place as soon as possible to avoid the people of the Church of Light, but he had no choice but to stay.

Although a consensus had been reached with the representatives of the Three City-States and the banknotes signed by the three representatives had been confirmed by the Versailles Bank Union Office, the allocation of the one hundred and fifty thousand refugees from the three places still needed detailed negotiation. Fortunately, with the preliminary agreement reached at the banquet, the negotiation went smoothly. The allocation of one hundred and fifty thousand refugees was essentially decided according to Komer’s plan—seventy thousand from Myron Duchy and forty thousand each from the Meine and Susoer City-States. This was the final decision Komer had made after careful deliberation.

After all this was done, Komer was still unable to relax. Preparing the various supplies needed by the refugees for the winter was the top priority. Although he had instructed Puber and Hesse to help purchase food before departing, the situation now far exceeded his original expectations. From thirty thousand to one hundred and fifty thousand people—five times the number of people initially planned to receive—the quantities of food could not be purchased in any one place and had to be bought separately at various food production areas and cities. As for fuel, there was no need to worry too much. Being adjacent to Leon, the kingdom’s largest coal-producing region meant that even last-minute purchases could be made in time.

Moreover, other essential living goods, though not the lord’s responsibility to prepare, still required the lord’s assistance in sourcing. At the very least, residents should be able to purchase these items when needed. Naturally, this task fell to Caffrey to contact the members of the Barefoot Society.

“What did you say, Knight Maray? This man is a noble from the Homer region, and you say he has magic abilities of considerable level, have I heard you correctly?”

Surprised, his eyebrows shot up, amber eyes sparkling with a clear radiance. His luxurious mage robes suddenly rippled like water as he became somewhat excited upon hearing this news. After screening all the guests at Versailles Hunting Manor, it turned out exactly as Onia had anticipated—no clue worth mentioning. It seemed the murder case could only end there. However, the Knight Maray who had come to assist in the investigation proposed such an astonishing clue, how could it not excite and shock Onia?

“Yes, I personally witnessed him using magic, although we did not detect any Dark Magic Power in him,” Knight Maray replied with a hint of hesitation on his handsome face. Captain Kent had reiterated multiple times not to divulge the pursuit of that strange thief to anyone, even if they belonged to the Church of Light. Maray had to keep silent; this was as far as he could go.

“Oh? It seems I must meet this inconspicuous magical prodigy. Komer, eighteen years old, heh, truly accomplished at a young age. Lord of Caucasus in the Homer region, Baron, accompanied by Caffrey, a Barefoot Society merchant, hmm, and another follower, came to Versailles to discuss accepting refugees with Duke Tez, Minister of Internal Affairs. It appears this man has quite the background—a mere Baron, yet a Lord of the notorious place that is Caucasus, but able to meet with Duke Tez. Maybe this man is the one we are searching for.” The white-robed mage stroked his smooth chin and turned to ask, “Knight Maray, what nature of magic did you see this person use?”

“Er, there was Fire Magic, um, and also White Magic; he possesses a considerably high level of proficiency in both.” Knight Maray answered haltingly, recalling the events.

The white-robed mage, his attention fully focused on the other party’s response, failed to notice Maray’s awkward expression as he answered. When Fire Magic was mentioned, the mage’s spirits lifted, his eyes brightening, but when Maray also mentioned that the other party had a high level of White Magic, it led the white-robed magician into confusion.

White Magic is primarily used for rescue and healing. If the other party truly possessed Dark Magic Power, they should be using Dark series healing spells rather than practicing White Magic. This seemed somewhat contradictory.
