Chapter 413: Army base
Chapter 413: Army base
Nika didn't stop complaining the whole meal that there wasn't any alcohol in the whole base. Contrary to Uriel, she wasn't satisfied with the generous serving of local delicacies nor was she curious about the army. In fact, every minute she spent inside the base felt like an eternity to her, given that she grew up in the revolutionary army who opposed the government.
She hated the uniforms, the discipline, but more than anything, she hated the attention she got wherever she went. Being stared at felt the same as her mystical sense being triggered and she felt she couldn't lower her guard for a second. Because of that, she asked Uriel permission to go rest at their room and he didn't mind since her presence was making things difficult for him too.
Now that he was free to roam around, Uriel decided to check on the army base and see if he could learn something useful. The armory was obviously out of bounds to civilians, but he was glad to see that the garage was not.
There were all sorts of armored vehicles, some of which he had never seen before. The most interesting ones were amphibian ATVs and the hovercrafts, he knew of their existence but had never seen one in person and he made a mental note to ask Cassandra if he could take a ride in one of those later.
Although in regular circumstances, vehicles were completely useless in the presence of cryptids, that wasn't necessarily true when the occupants were strong enough to not be afraid of being surrounded or ambushed.
For starters, the vehicle stopping was a very obvious tell that there were enemies nearby and all it took for them to work again was to kill the cryptids and then activate a tier 1 battery pack near the engine.
"This would have come in handy on the way here," He muttered thinking he was by himself, but then he heard someone bumping their head into something and then yelping in pain. "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you."
"No! It was my fault. I was too focused on fixing this thing." Said Stella as she rolled from below the amphibian ATV on a mechanic creeper.
"You!" Uriel exclaimed after recognizing her trait. It was the same female engineer that went on the trip to Chichén Itzá, the one with eyes capable of telling the mollecular composition of the materials she inspected.
"Me!?" She replied pointing towards herself.
"Huh, could it be... you don't remember me? You're Stella, aren't you? I'm your debt for what you did for me last time."
"I don't think we've met before, I'm new here." She said awkardly.
"I'm Uriel... the archaeologist."
"You're that kid!? You look... grown up." Stella blushed as she lowered her gaze and then continued. "There's no need to thank me, if it wasn't for what you did back then we would have all died."
"It recently came to my attention that the Mapple corp. doesn't know about the jaguar cryptid. Do you know anything about that?"
"Uhm... those who survived, did so thanks to you. We tried contacting you to see if it was fine to make our reports, but the boss didn't let us and they ended up firing us for refusing to be debriefed."
"All of the survivors?" Uriel was beyond shocked that so many people covered for him without asking for anything in return. Even worse, they ended up being fired from one of the best paying corporations for that which made him feel bad for them.
"Yep, all of them."
"So that's why you're in this city..."
"Oh! No, not really. This is my home city and I'm currently volunteering to help solve the crisis. They needed battle ready engineers and I answered the call to serve the flag, though I must admit I only did so because my family lives here. As soon as the city is safe I'm leaving the army."
"Wait, you can leave the army just like that!?" Uriel asked in surprise.
"Of course, when you volunteer you're free to leave the army whenever you want. It's not the same as those who joined the army to acquire a trait, they have contracts for a set amount of time. Also, they can't court martial, but they can fine you for misconduct."
That was all Uriel needed to decide his next step. Staying idle while they gathered or crafted the parts Medusa needed was a pain for him, but now he knew volunteers could leave the army at will, he thought he finally found a way to keep busy.
After thanking Stella once more, Uriel hurried to Cassandra's quarters. As the highest ranking officer on the city, she had her own private room and it wasn't difficult finding it.
"Cassandra, I'm here..." He said after knocking.
The door bursted open and a swift hand pulled him in and the door was shut behind Uriel. Then, Colonel Cassandra the heavenly Sword proceeded to plant a kiss on his lips before he took notice of what just happened.
"What are you doing?" He said after pushing her away.
"You know exactly what I'm doing," She replied with a bare face. Instead of her army uniform, she was wearing a white laced lingerie set that really complimented her figure, though Uriel kept his gaze directly on her eyes to avoid triggering something awkward.
Needless to say, that 'something awkward' referred to his lewd magazine that provided useless information whenever he ogled someone with lust. "maybe you don't know what you're doing." She continued once she realized he was spacing out. Although Uriel looked different from when he first met him.
On Cassandra's eyes, he was the same dorky looking guy, only he was now the CEO of his own company, a heavenly rank hunter and also, the man who saved her sister. "Just lay still, I'll do the work."
"Stop it, you crazy woman!" Uriel shouted as she shook her off.
